Project Faula
Formerly Open Doors through Education, Project Faulu is a comprehensive educational support service with after school attributes that provides comprehensive educational support services to refugee children in grades K-12 in West Michigan. It is vital that the children be given extra support to ensure that they successfully integrate well into the United States educational system.
The program has the following components:
Comprehensive Homework Support Services - Students are assisted in completing their homework assignments and taught independent study skills and equipping them with skills necessary to complete the work on their own. The program is open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday starting 4pm- 6pm.
Reading Program - Once students have finished their homework, they participate in a 15-30 minute reading session. The program runs the same time with the home work support.
Parental Support [New] – Quarterly of workshops to help parents navigate the education system. Workshop topics include an overview of educational services, time-management strategies and how to engage in the child learning opportunities.
Referral Services – WMRECC cannot deliver all the services alone, that is why, we refer families to other agencies for services that they need.
Citizenship Preparation Classes [New]: In collaboration with other refugee organizations and other stakeholders, we support families that are planning to become American Citizens through a summer program. Test preparation and US history are emphasized. The next session will be June 25- August 5, 2010.
